COMLPETING STORIES FOR BD STUDENTS

A Town Mouse and a Country Mouse were friends. The Country Mouse one dayinvited his friend to come and see him at his home in the fields. The Town Mouse came and they sat down to a dinner of barleycorns and roots the latter of which had a distinctly earthy flavour.

The flavour was not much to the taste of the guest and presently he broke out with “My poor dear friend, you live here no better than the ants. Now, you should just see how I fare! My larder is a regular horn of plenty. You must come andstay with me and I promise you shall live on the fat of the land."

So when he returned to town he took the Country Mouse with him and showed him into a larder containing flour and oatmeal and figs and honey and dates.

The Country Mouse had never seen anything like it and sat down to enjoy the luxuries his friend provided. But before they had well begun, the door of the larder opened and some one came in. The two Mice scampered off and hid themselves in a narrow and exceedingly uncomfortable hole. Presently, when all was quiet, they ventured out again. But some one else came in, and off they scuttled again. This was too much for the visitor. "Good bye," said he, "I'm off. You live in the lap of luxury, I can see, but you are surrounded by dangers whereas at home I can enjoy my simple dinner of roots and corn in peace."

Moral : Safety is the first importance.

Elephant and Friends :

One day an elephant wandered into a forest in search of friends.

He saw a monkey on a tree.

“Will you be my friend?” asked the elephant.

Replied the monkey, “You are too big. You can not swing from trees like me.”

Next, the elephant met a rabbit. He asked him to be his friends.

But the rabbit said, “You are too big to play in my burrow!”

Then the elephant met a frog.

“Will you be my friend? He asked.

“How can I?” asked the frog.

“You are too big to leap about like me.”

The elephant was upset. He met a fox next.

“Will you be my friend?” he asked the fox.

The fox said, “Sorry, sir, you are too big.”

The next day, the elephant saw all the animals in the forest running for their lives.

The elephant asked them what the matter was.

The bear replied, “There is a tier in the forest. He’s trying to gobble us all up!”

The animals all ran away to hide.

The elephant wondered what he could do to solve everyone in the forest.

Meanwhile, the tiger kept eating up whoever he could find.

The elephant walked up to the tiger and said, “Please, Mr. Tiger, do not eat up these poor animals.”

“Mind your own business!” growled the tiger.

The elephant has a no choice but to give the tiger a hefty kick.

The frightened tiger ran for his life.

The elephant ambled back into the forest to announce the good news to everyone.

All the animals thanked the elephant.

They said, “You are just the right size to be our friend.”

This is a short story about Hungry Wolf.

Once, a wolf was very hungry. It looked for food here and there. But it couldn't get any. At last it found a loaf of bread and piece of meat in the hole of a tree.

The hungry wolf squeezed into the hole. It ate all the food. It was a woodcutter's lunch. He was on his way back to the tree to have lunch. But he saw there was nofood in the hole, instead, a wolf.

On seeing the woodcutter, the wolf tried to get out of the hole. But it couldn't. Its tummy was swollen.

The woodcutter caught the wolf and gave it nice beatings.

Once The Sun and The Wind happened to have a quarrel. Both of them claimed to be stronger. At last they agreed to have a trial of strength.

"Here comes a traveller. Let us see who can strip him of his cloak?" said the Sun.

The Wind agreed and did choose to have the first turn.

He blew in the hardest possible way.

As a result, the traveller wrapped his cloak even more tightly around him.

Then it was the turn of the Sun. At first he shone very gently. The sun went on shining brighter and brighter. The traveller felt hot.

Before long he took off his cloak and put it in his bag.

The Wind accepted his defeat.

There were two goats.

Over a river there was a very narrow bridge.

One day a goat was crossing this bridge.

Just at the middle of the bridge he met another goat.

There was no room for them to pass.

"Go back," said one goat to the other, "There is no room for both of us".

"Why should I go back?” said the other goat. "Better you must go back."

“You must go back”, said the first goat, "because I am stronger than you.”

"You are not stronger than I”, said the second goat.

"We will see about that", said the first goat and he put down his horns to fight.

"Stop!” said the second goat.

“If we fight, we shall both fall into the river and be drowned and instead I have a plan. I shall lie down and you may walk over me.”

Then the wise one laid down on the bridge and the other goat walked highly over him.

So they crossed the bridge comfortably and went on their ways.
You can not please everyone.

This is a short story to teach you that you can not please everyone. A man and his son were once going with their Donkey to market. As they were walking along by its side a countryman passed them and said : "You fool, what a Donkey for but to ride is upon?"

So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way. But soon they passed a group of men. One of whom said : "See that lazy youngster. He lets his father walk while he rides."

So the Man ordered his Boy to get off and got on himself. But they hadn't gone far when they passed two women. One of whom said to the other : "Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along."

Well the Man did not know what to do. But at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey. By this time they had come to the town and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them. The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at. The men said :

"Aren't you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor Donkey of yours - you and your hulking son?"

The man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, till at last they cut down a pole, tied the Donkey's feet to it and raised the pole and the Donkey to their shoulders. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them till they came to Market Bridge when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge and his fore-feet being tied together, he was drowned.

"That will teach you," said an old man who had followed them :

Tit For Tat

Tit For Tat :
A river flew through a forest. Once, a hungry lion came to quench his thirst at the river. As he was drinking water, he spotted a donkey drinking water on the other bank. The lion thought, "Donkeys are fools. I must do something to catch this foolish animal for lunch."
So the lion called out, "Mr. Donkey, are there any jackals on your side of the river bank? I feel like hearing their song."
"No sir, jackals cannot sing any better than me. Let me sing for you," the foolish donkey said. He lifted his head up to the sky, closed his eyes and started braying. The lion crossed over a bridge and caught the donkey when he was braying.
But the donkey was clever. He said, "Oh! Do you want to eat me? I don't mind, but I have heard that good lions pray to God before the lunch."
""Yes, yes, I must pray before lunch," said the lion and closed his eyes to pray. The donkey kicked the lion hard and ran away.
The lion had been paid through the same plan he himself had made.

So the paan seller shouted out to him, "Hey, will you exchange amango for a paan?"
The mango vendor agreed. But the paan seller took some rotten betel leaves and made a tiny paan. He gave it the mango vendor. When the mango vendor asked for chuna, he replied, "Go and rub the paan against the wall to get chuna."
The mango vendor realized that he was being cheated. He gave a green mango to the paan seller. On seeing the green mango, the paan seller said, "Give me a yellow mango."
The mango vendor replied, "Rub your mango against that yellow painted wall and you will get your yellow mango."

When the peacocks left, the crow found some of their feathers scattered on the ground. He picked them up and went to his friend the monkey. With his help, the crow tucked the feathers on his body. Then he went to the peacocks and said, "Let me join you for now Iam as beautiful as you are."
But the peacocks grew angry and pecked the crow away from there. The crow flew back to his own friends. But the crows said, "Go away from here. You cannot live with us because you don't feel proud to be what you are."

He got up and saw the mouse running away. The bull was very angry. He thought of teaching a lesson to the mouse. He chased the mouse to punish him.

The tiny mouse was quick on his feet. He ran fast even as the huge bull chased him. Then the mouse ran into a hole in a wall. The bull crashed his head into the wall and started bleeding. The wall crashed from a side but still the mouse did not emerge from the hole.

The snake agreed to stay in their well. Days went by and the snake started to eat three frogs of the enemy group everyday. Soon all the frogs of that group got killed. The Fox and The Snake

The Fox and The Snake :

Once, a fox lived in a forest. One fine morning, he was roaming aroundthe forest and he was feeling bored.

As he was passing by, he saw a huge, thick and long snake lying under some trees. His long body stretched from one comer of the path to the .other. The fox got much impressed by the snake's big size. He thought, "It's such a large snake. It must eat a lot to be so big. I wish I will be aslarge and long as this snake. I too must lie on the ground and stretch my body. If I crawl on the rough ground and stretch my body end to end, I will surely become as long as him. I must try this at once."

So the fox lay down on the path by the snake's side and started stretching his body. He tried hard but his bones and muscles ached, yet he did not grow long enough. At last he stretched so hard that his stomach burst open and he died on the spot.
