A Clever Astrologer

Once there was a king who was very fond of knowing his future from the astrologers. A famous astrologer happened to stop at his Capital on his way to Banaras. The king called on him to know his future and the astrologer said something unpleasant. At this the king got furious and condemned him to death saying “Men like you shouldn’t live to spoil the peace of world.” But another thought had crossed his mind before the astrologer was taken away for execution. “How long would you live?” asked the king. The astrologer mused for a while for some way to escape, as he was sure the king would prove him a liar putting him to death then and there, if he would live longer than that day. With ready wit he said, “The stars declare that I shall die only a week before your majesty, so good bye. I shall wait to receive your majesty where you have been sending me.” At this the king turned pale as dead and shouted, “Drive this wretch away, let him not come again.”

8. (d) Dialogue Between Two Friends About Uses and Abuses of Mobile Phone

Zafi: Hello, Zarif. How are you?

Zarif: I am fine and what about you?

Zafi: I am fine too. It is long time since I met you last.

Zarif: But we have kept constant contact only because of the mobile phone.

Zafi: Yes, this mobile phone has become a very instrumental device in our daily life. We cannot do

         without it for a single day.

Zarif: Right. It has reduced uncertainty, doubt, anxious waiting and painful suspense. In fact, it has

          made our life easy and comfortable in many ways.

Zafi: Besides, it has made our global communication dynamic and faster.

Zarif: But we must admit that it has some disadvantages too.

Zafi: You are absolutely right. It causes brain tumor, genetic damage and many other incurable

          diseases. It is especially hazardous for the children and pregnant women.

Zarif: Yes, during conversation, the blood brain barrier may get damaged, the blood pressure may

          get high and the red blood cells may get affected.

Zafi: Besides, it is doing a lot of harms to the teenagers. They can easily indulge in many obscene

         programmes also. In this way it is spreading pornography.

Zarif: Absolutely. Moreover, it is helping young boys and girls to contact easily with their so called

         lovers in season and out of season.

Zafi: You are right. They are approaching negative way.

Zarif: It is high time we saved them from their moral degradation.

Zafi: Right you are. The criminals are also carrying out their operations with the help of it. It is also

        very alarming.

Zarif: All these are very true. Though we are getting immense benefits from it, we should use it with

          much care and caution to avoid its demerits. 

Zafi: Yes. Thank you so much. Good bye now.

Zarif: Good bye.

It is quite a ling period you have not written a single letter. However, we have received a letter from your English teacher Mr. A D .We are much shocked to have the report that you have failed in the first terminal examination / pretest examination. You are a meritorious student. You won the scholarship in the junior scholarship examination. How do you cut a sorry figure in the examination? You know all of us expect something unique from you. Oh! You have greatly disappointed us. We suspect that you are wasting your valuable time mixing with bad companies foolishly. But this will ruin you. You should think about your future. Remember time once gone will never be got back. Student life is said to be the seedtime of life. As you sow, so will you reap. Remember, you have to stand on your own feet. If you do not use your time properly and study well, it will bring sorrows and sufferings to you. A single puff of cigarette smoke contains 15 billion particles of substances which are very dangerous for health. Smoking causes cancer,heart attack and other fatal diseases. Excessive smoking may lead a person for premature death.

I would suggest you to give up smoking just now. Firm determination of mind will help you in this respect. Never indulge in such dangerous habit again.

It is quite natural that it takes time to get accustomed to a new environment. But you should not forget that nothing is impossible for a man. So with the passage of time you will be able to adjust yourself to the new place and the new food because habit is the second nature of a man. Take everything easily, mix with the new friend and you will find everything ok. Give up worry and think about your better prospect of life.

Neighbors are those persons who live closer to our house or flat. Man is a social being. He cannot live alone in the society. So he has to live with other neighbor in a particular place. I live in a city. I have many neighbors.  All of them are very co-operative, helpful and they are also honest and well behaved. They are simple, truthful and sociable. Here some neighbors are dishonest and selfish. I have got a next door neighbor. He is about 40 years old. His name is Md. Murad. He is very sweet in nature. He is a reputed lecturer of Bangladesh Islami University. He is a lecturer of English Department. He is well- educated, well-behaved and well- dressed. He is very sociable, cordial, kind, helpful, co-operative, gentle, polite, dutiful, cheerful and also very smart. In a word Md. Murad is a very nice friend. He is highly reputed and loved everywhere. Yet he has no pride. He is my father’s best friend. His wife is a lecturer of Ramgong Government College. They have a sweet girl. Her name is Ruma. She is my best friend. I pass my leisure with her. They are very affectionate to us. They love me very much. They are also good teacher for mine. In their leisure time they teach me. When I face any problem, I go to their flat to solve my problems. My neighbor enjoys a peace and happiness in life. So I am proud for my neighbor. A social life cannot be successful and profitable without a good next door neighbor. So a next door neighbor plays an important role in making our life happy and comfortable. 

(d) Globalization

Globalization means the process of expanding trade and commerce all over the world taking the advantage of borderless market. Through globalization the different countries around the world has come closer regarding the trade, commerce and cultural points. It has created an integrated global economy which influences every country of the world developed or undeveloped. There is a fear about globalization in the developing country like ours. Critics and economists say that in the race of globalization developing countries cannot be a match to the developed and capitalist countries. It has been found that most of the advantages of globalization go to the capitalist countries. The poor and developing countries are only supplying a pool of cheap manpower to the benefit for the industrialist countries. However, there is at least one benefit for the developing countries which is to provide the poor people with employment as labours in mills and factories run by foreign investments. Globalization has offered employment opportunity for developing countries. Besides, they can draw more foreign investment if they can ensure good governance and proper infrastructure. However globalization was initiated in the subcontinent to accelerate economic growth and a competitive atmosphere for industrial development. But to our despair globalization could not do much good for South Asia including Bangladesh. We are looking for what good globalization can do for us in the future.

9. (b) Uses and Abuses of Computer.

Computer is an electronic device that can perform a lot of logical analysis as commanded by the operator. A computer stores information in its memory and uses whenever it is needed. Computer is the latest and most brilliant child of science. Science has gifted us computer  that has affected our style of living and made life easy going.

The use of computer puts the world at a different height. But every coin has two sides, in that way, computer has some advantages and also some disadvantages regarding its uses and abuses.

Computer is used in measuring daily routine work, trade and commerce, diagnosing diseases, entertainment, games and sports, transport, educational sector, researching space and what not. It has done great wonders in inventing e-mail, internet and robot. Nowadays computer helps to diagnose a disease. Computer is of great use to us also in the field of agriculture and business. It has lessened our work loads and made our life easy and comfortable. In the world of technology, computer is useful to do a work easily, smoothly, fast. Computer has an impact on the society. It has changed the angle of life. The use of computer technology has affected every part of life. People are using computer to perform different tasks easier. A big advantage of computer is to save times and effort and reduces the overall cost to complete a particular task. Students replace a paper and pen with a computer for education, handwriting skills may suffer. Learners benefits from increased brain activities when writing new information by hand, particularly in subjects such as math and chemistry. Most computer programs include a spelling and grammar check, and students might depend on the computer to correct spelling and grammatical errors. At present lives cannot be led without computer.

Many people abuse  computer for negative purpose. some students use computer to access important coursework, while other students may abuse computers playing  games or killing their valuable time chatting with others unnecessarily. They play games and chat for a long period of time. That causes wastage of time and energy. Young generation is now spending  more time on the social sites like face book, twitter etc. That is also affecting our social life. People also abuse computer for negative activities. They use a computer to hack the data of a company and credit card numbers of the people and misuse them. Some people waste their time watching movies and listening to songs in it.

However, at the end, computer has brought about revolutionary change in our life. It has made our life easy, comfortable, quick and meaningful. We cannot do a single moment without it. It is a part and parcel in our daily life.

9. (d) Duties of a Student

Students are the greatest force of a nation. They are the future leaders of a country. They can build or destroy a nation. Hence, they play a vital role in a society as well as in a country.

The first duty of students is towards themselves. They should try to have good health, for a sound mind lives in a sound body. One cannot do anything great without good health, however much one wants to do so. For this purpose they should take part in games and sports. They should be guided by the maxim “Read while you read and play while you play.” The second duty which they owe to themselves is character formation. Building up of good habits in the beginning is very necessary. The good habits that are formed in the student life last throughout. And character is nothing but a bundle of habits. Thirdly, they should pay full attention to their studies, for it is their studies which shall determine their future course of life.

Besides duties towards themselves, students owe duties towards their parents, elders and teachers. Parents who are responsible for their having come into the beautiful, delightful world have a moral claim upon their children, who should do everything to repay at least some part of the irreparable debt they owe to their parents. They should not do anything that tarnishes the image of their family. Next to parents come teachers to whom students woe irreparable debt. The teacher who guides youth to course through this life as a respectable member of society deserves the most sanctified respect of the students.

Man is a social being. He is what he can be; what he intends to become due to society. Social service leads to the liberation of the self which in turn leads to the ennoblement of the soul and the enlargement of the spirit. Besides these spiritual gains, students can get experience of an education in harmonious social living. They can also eke out their resources by earning some little money as a result of their social service. They can help in the eradication of social evils like infant marriages, asterism, untouchability etc.During their vacation students can organize night schools in villages and thus be helpful in solving the problem of illiteracy.

Service to humanity is the crying need of the hour. Nationalism is an utterly crude term in the context of the modern times. The world is a family; this should ever remain on the conscious plan of their minds. Thanks to science that it has conquered barriers of space. Students of one country can communicate and establish contacts with students of foreign countries. They should try to develop sense of accommodation for the people of all countries without discrimination on the basis of social or political systems of their countries or the faith or religion of their societies

Students are the future hope and strength of the nation. They should not spoil their valuable life by getting involved in politics. They are more than often to take part in politics actively and thereby do a great deal of harms to the selves. Hence students must not indulge in politics in any way during their student life.

Student life is the foundation stone for the future struggle of life. This is why the students should try again and yet again and over again to come out successful.
