Part A : Reading Test (50 Marks)
Read the passage. Then answer the questions following.
The National Memorial at Savar is a symbol of the nation's respect for the martyrs of the War of Liberation.
It is built with concrete, but made of blood. It stands 150 feet tall, but every martyr it stands for stands so much taller. It is an achievement the dimension of which can be measured, but it stands for an achievement, which is immeasurable. It stands upright for the millions of martyrs who laid down their lives so that we may stand upright, in honour and dignity, amongst the nations of the world.
Most prominently visible is the 150 feet tower that stands on a base measuring 130 feet wide. There are actually a series of 7 towers that rise by stages to a height of 150 feet. The foundation was laid on the first anniversary of the Victory Day. There is actually a plan to build a huge complex in several phases. The entire complex will cover an area of 126 acres. The plan of this complex includes a mosque, a library and a museum. The relics of the liberation war will be kept in the museum. They will ever remind our countrymen and all who would come to visit the museum of the valiant struggle and supreme sacrifices of the freedom loving people. Here also will be a clear warning to all oppressors that the weapons of freedom need not be very big, and that oppression will always be defeated. The will of people prevails, for man is born to be free.
The most moving sight of the complex is the several graves of the martyred freedom fighters : close to the tower. Standing in front of the graves we bow down our heads in respect, as the towers soar up symbolizing the loftiness of their spirit.

Part A : Reading Test (50 Marks)
Read the passage. Then answer the questions following.
The International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic, cultural diversity and multilingualism. It is a red letter day in our national history. The date represents the day in 1952 when students from different educational institutions demonstrated for recognition of their language, Bangla, as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan. They were shot by police in Dhaka near High Court for violating section 144. The streets of Dhaka University was stained with the blood of Barkat, Rafique, Salam, Jabbar and others. The following day strike paralysed the whole of East Pakistan. At last the Pakistani rulers were compelled to accept Bangla as one of the state languages of Pakistan.
The UNESCO has proclaimed February 21st as the International Mother Language Day to be observed globally in recognition of the sacrifices of the martyrs. It is our greatest achievement. The proposal to recognise 21st February as the International Mother Language Day was first put forward for consideration to the general assembly of UNESCO by a Canadian Organization. At first it was rejected as some western countries opposed to this proposal. This proposal has again been put forward for consideration by the Education Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh to the 30th general assembly of UNESCO in November, 1999. Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy on 12 May 1820. She was the second daughter of her wealthy parents. However, Florence was a devoted Christian and when she was only seventeen years old, she felt God was calling her to serve the humanity. So, she decided to nurse the sick. Then in  1853 she was given her first post reorganizing a small hospital in Harvey Street, London. It was an institution for the care of sick gentlewomen in distressed circumstances. Florence Nightingale did an excellent job of reorganizing the hospital.  As  a result of

At that time, Britain, France and Turkey were fighting against Russia. They arrived in Turkey in November 1854. Florence Nightingale found military hospitals dirty and bare and a great number of soldiers were dying of diseases. She worked very hard to bring order and cleanliness to the hospitals. Part A : Reading Test (50 Marks)
Read the passage and answer the questions below :
Long ago, there lived a young man named Abdul Karim in a village. Various problems and sufferings were the constant companions of the villagers. Quarrels, ill-feelings, jealousy and enmity were the major traits of the social life of the village. He found all these unbearable and so he left the village. He went to a jungle to live in isolation. There he built a nice small house with wood, bamboo and reeds. "Ah, what a happy life I have got now! Now I am far away from the enmity and ill-feelings of the people," said Abdul Karim to himself. But one day he noticed some holes in his blanket. He wondered who might make these. However, after a few days, he discovered some mice in his hut. So, he brought a cat so that he might get the mice killed. As the cat needed milk, he had to bring a cow. The cowboy was to be provided with food. It made him take a wife to cook food. Then the couple had  children and thus he was in a family again. So it is impossible to live alone. It is only possible if a person is either an angel or a devil. Man cannot live without food, shelter, companions and cooperation. They have to assist each other. As human beings, they cannot avoid all these. Only by living in a family or community, they can fulfill their needs. So, we should live in a society to be good people and happy citizens.
