Green House Effect
The
greenhouse effect is the effect caused by increased quantities of gases such as
carbon dioxide in the air. These gases trap the heat from the sun, and cause a
gradual rise in the temperature of the Earth's atmosphere. The Greenhouse Effect
is a warming of the atmosphere around the Earth. This happens when some gases
(carbon dioxide, water vapor, ozone, methane, etc.,) in the atmosphere trap the
heat radiated by the Earth. The atmosphere acts like the glass in a greenhouse
(it is from here that the greenhouse Effect gets its name). Over the past few
hundred years, humans have been burning trees and fossil fuels. This has
released many millions of tones of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Carbon
dioxide is very good at absorbing the sun’s heat. The extra carbon dioxide has
caused the atmosphere of the Earth to become warmer. This, in turn, causes more
water to evaporate into the atmosphere. Water vapor is also good at absorbing
heat, which causes the Earth’s atmosphere to become even warmer. The increase
in the average temperature on Earth is changing living conditions on the
planet. The effects of greenhouse are serious and dangerous. It has been
predicted that by the mid way through the next century temperatures may have
risen as much as 4á´¼C. This will greatly reduce mankind's ability to grow food
and damage wildlife and wilderness. As a result of global warming, the ice in
the Polar Regions is melting. This may raise
the sea level of water and ood coastal areas. So, farmland will go under water.
The alarming news for Bangladesh
is that the lower southern part of the country may one day go under water. At
present the greenhouse effect has become a matter of great concern for the
world. Some measures should be taken immediately to stop it. The sources of
greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide should be brought
under control. We should plant more trees as trees absorb carbon dioxide which
is the main cause of greenhouse effect. Worldwide tree plantation programme
should be strengthened. We must not burn and destroy forestland. Old vehicles
must not be allowed to ply on the roads. The most important thing is to raise
public awareness in this regard. However, to conclude, it can be noted that reduction
in the emission of greenhouse gases can prevent the adverse effects of global
warming. Measures need to be taken by government and non-governmental
organizations to control the emission of toxic gases in the atmosphere. Greater
use of renewable energy and forestation instead of deforestation should be
promoted.
